Food Patriots
On October 24, the UVA Food Collaborative will start the 2014-2015 Food Film Forum Series and celebrate National Food Day by showing "Food Patriots." Afterwards, stick around to hear our panel of local Food Patriots discuss all the engaging and exciting activities happening right here in Charlottesville.
Food Patriots introduces people who are “trying to change the way Americans eat food, buy food, and educate the next generation of consumers.”
After the film, join us for a panel discussion with some of Charlottesville’s own Food Patriots about the work being done in our community:
Jeanette Abi-Nader, Executive Director, City Schoolyard Garden
Pastor Cass Bailey, Trinity Episcopal Church
Ryan Blosser, Dancing Star Farms and Project GROWS, Waynesboro
Paul Freedman, UVA Department of Politics, moderator
Co-sponsored by the UVa Food Collaborative and the City Schoolyard Garden.
Resistance
Did you know that antibiotic resistance may be the single biggest threat to health security in this century, or that Americans spend more than 8 million extra days in the hospital because of antibiotic resistance? Or that 80 % of all antibiotics sold in the US are used on conventional animal farms? These are just a few of the many important issues raised in Resistance, the Food Film Forum's first screening of 2015.
Join us on Thursday, February 12th in Minor Hall Room 125 at 6:00 pm for a Relay Foods reception, for the film at 6:30, followed by a panel discussion with Dr. Amy Mathers, known as the antibiotic steward for the UVAHS, and community leader Ann Mallek, who faces the practical challenges of safe farming versus current agricultural practices.
Growing Cities
A Film About Urban Farming in America
Growing Cities examines the role of urban farming in America and asks how much power it has to revitalize our cities and change our diet.

Tanya Denckla Cobb, Associate Director, Institute for Environmental Negotiation, UVA, moderator
White Water, Black Gold
White Water, Black Gold follows mountaineering and hiking guide David Lavallee on a three-year journey across western Canada. As he treks, Lavallee searches for answers about the activities of the world’s thirstiest oil industry: the Tarsands.
The film examines the costs to land, water, wildlife and people associated with developing the second-largest deposit of “oil” in the world.
After the film, join us for a discussion, including the related topic of prospects of fracking for natural gas in Virginia with expert panelists:
Rick Parrish, environmental attorney with many years experience working on fracking law and policy in Virginia;
Greg Buppert, Senior attorney, Southern Environmental Law Center, active in fracking issues.
