Virginia Food Systems Leadership Institute is Returning!

The Virginia Food Systems Leadership Institute is returning for summer 2022. Check below for details and information session dates!

This summer 2022 class will open your eyes to how food connects to all aspects of resilient and sustainable communities—thriving economy, environment, public health, and more. It is an approved elective for Global Sustainability major and minor students.

Food system work is a recognized field, and, what’s more, the jobs in this arena are growing every year, at all levels—nonprofits, local government, state and federal government, private sector, and even grassroots activist work.

PLAN 3500/5500: The Virginia Food Systems Leadership Institute (VFSLI) prepares rising leaders in the area of sustainable food systems by combining knowledge in food systems through the lens of food equity, with building competencies in skills for leadership, and a research project relating to farm-to-university challenges to prepare students for food system job opportunities. VFSLI is unique in bringing together both faculty and students from different universities – GMU, JMU, UVA, VT, VCU – for a multidisciplinary dive into food systems. Alumni of the first year have already gained food system job opportunities! For graduate students, undergraduate students, and food system practitioners seeking professional development opportunities. No prerequisites.
