This class explores their involvement in the interpretation and implementation of federal policy, the coordination of policy solutions, and advocacy for the policies and populations they serve. Policy areas we may consider include poverty and social welfare; the environment; and civil and political rights.

Comments	Nonprofit organizations in the United States play a critical intermediary role between government and citizens. They implement significant portions of social policy, they educate policy makers, and they execute government contracts, stepping into a role otherwise reserved for civil servants. This class partners with the Adiuvans Foundation (http://www.adiuvans.org/) to study issues of food insecurity and food justice in the local community, assess the work of nonprofits in this space, and award $100,000 in grants to support efforts to improve food security and justice. **This class will directly investigate policies and the selective implementation of policy that disproportionately impacts people of color. We will investigate what anti-racist policy would look like in form and in practice with respect to food insecurity, food justice, and our social welfare system.
